For 25 years, comedian Sandra Bernhard has shared her outspoken, opinionated voice on issues of sexuality, government, and individual rights by providing witty, hilarious commentary with a flare for controversy. She’s one of Comedy Central’s Top 100 Funniest People, she’s had successful one-w0men performances which met rave reviews from sources such as The New York Times and countless others, and she’s a film and television star known for her role on Roseanne and many appearances on late night talk shows. She’s also written four books of personal insights, introspective rants, prose and essays in addition to contributing to editorial pieces for many national magazines.
Known for her music abilities, Bernhard’s album Whatever It Takes fuses Rock n’ Roll with samba and international dance and folk. Her stage show has audiences enthralled with her bombastic, intellectual blending of pop culture references with perfect comedic timing. Bernhard takes the Austin stage on Friday, June 4th as part of the District 512 benefit for the Austin art and GLBT community, We’re Still Queer, Honey happening at Pine Street Station.
We’re Still Queer, Honey happens during Austin Pride Week 2010, and performing in addition to Bernhard will be the passionate songwriting of rock act White Widow, hip-hop artists God-des and She (who have made a notable appearance on HBO’s The L Word), and Austin’s female version of Guns and Roses, Paradise Titty, who not only look, but also sound better than Axl Rose. The Patty Griffin-influenced style of Stephanie Delk can be experienced along with the performance art of Chicago native S.I.R., known for his grassroots, creative methods of engaging the Queer community through art work. Bellydancing by dance group Joined at the Hip is sure to have you moving, and the entire evening celebrates many great Austin artists and benefits the art and GLBT community through non-profits Out Youth, HAAM, and HOPE.
The evening will be hosted by the the Austin Chronicle’s 2007 pick “Best Drag Queen of Austin,” Saffire, and will be followed by a celebrity drag show you don’t want to miss. DJ Mary Coronado will be spinning all night long, making this party one not to miss.
